I am an Au Pair from the United States who currently studies in Italy at a residential international school. I am very enthusiastic and dynamic, and looking for a family with a similar disposition. I would like to begin at the end of August or early September.
My name is Emma and I am Danish, Kenyan, American. I lived in the United States from age five to age 16. I am eighteen years old and will be graduating from the United World College of the Adriatic in May. Before my two years at UWC I attended a prestigious private school in Seattle Washington (Lakeside School). I left because I wanted to pursue a more multicultural and international learning environment. I have always considered myself a global citizen, part of reason being my multicultural background. My mother is Danish and works in the field of Global Education. My father is American, and I am Kenyan. Making my family very diverse. I grew up with all three of these cultures impacting me. However, I never lived in Denmark, and I truly want to explore and experience Danish culture, more than I have been able to. After my graduation I plan on taking a gap year before going to university. During this gap year I would like to be an Au Pair in Denmark. English is my first language; however, I took French for six years, and currently take Italian, I also understand some Danish but am not conversational in it.
I am a very outgoing person and have been since I was a kid. I have always been eager to explore the world, but not as a tourist, rather as part of a community. I think the most can be learned through cross cultural interactions, really being part of a culture. I am an active person and have been part of many different team sports growing up. I always like trying new things and going on adventures. However, the activities I like the most are dance and theatre. I have been acting for a large part of my life both professionally and through youth theatre, even being part of the board of a professional theatre, and a youth theatre festival. This gave me a lot of responsibility and skills. My favorite shows were always the student audiences for the elementary schools. Their energy and rapture always gave me extra enthusiasm as an actor.
Since I was thirteen, I have been babysitting in my home city of Seattle. I would take care of children of many different ages one and ten. I am most comfortable with students aged three and older, as I have more experience babysitting with this older age group. In my city I also volunteered at a specialized kindergarten for children with learning disabilities. Here I would work with kids on coloring and learning their letters and shapes. I always enjoyed these times because I liked finding fun ways we could learn together. As I mentioned I have work experience as an actor in Seattle theatre. I also taught theatre classes to children, and helped direct young children's shows for my local theatre. I always loved working with younger actors and found myself often taking up a mentorship role even when not directed to. I also have experience with tutoring English, Biology, and History. I also often helped the children I would babysit with their homework.
When I was young, I was always encouraged by my parents to explore and learn from the world around me. My father has a degree in zoology, and he was my first science teacher. We would go to the park or go on hikes and he would point out plants or insects to me, giving me a miniature ecology lesson, I could understand as a child. My mother would always encourage me to read. Before I was able to read on my own, she or my dad would sit with me at night and read a book to me. Once I began to read, I was never without a book in my hand. Both of my parents were very busy as they both worked, but when I was young my brother and I had a nanny. I know how impactful it can be to have a person around to help out at home, and for the children how helpful it can be to have someone around to interact with. This is why I want to be an Au Pair, because I love working with children, and I know how much it can help busy parents. I also want to be an Au Pair because it gives me a chance to experience a new culture through being part of a family.
