10 great ideas for you to find an au pair job you like faster
1. Upload photos to your au pair profile
Just like you, most families click on profiles with pictures. Families worry about the safety and happiness of their family, just as you do about yours. Naturally they want to get a good idea of what you are like. The best way to show them you are a nice, genuine au pair or nanny, is to let them see photos of you and your life. Make sure you’ve got about 6-8 pictures on your profile.
2. Friendly and informative au pair profile
Families will choose an au pair or nanny they feel they will like and they can trust to babysit their children. They want to know that you are kind and reliable. Give families reassurance and reasons to contact you. The more detailed your au pair profile is, the more contacts you will get.
3. Why you?
Write about things you are good at – describe your skills. It’s a big decision for families to trust you to look after their children. List all the things you feel you can help with to make the family’s life easier if they choose you.
4. Be open
Be informative and honest when writing your au pair profile. If you haven’t completed your full registration yet – do it today. The sooner you do it the sooner you’ll find the right family for you.
5. Be realistic in your childcare job search
Think carefully about ‘nice to have; and ‘must have’. Review your requirements and see what would you be happy to compromise on, in order to find an au pair job faster. Only put your “must haves” in your profile and searches. If a family can offer you even more, that’s a bonus!
6. Au pair’s nanny’s language skills
The more languages you speak, the more childcare job opportunities you will have. Write in the language of the country you want to go to, even if it’s not perfect. Search in more countries: it’s possible to find families offering nanny jobs in countries you might not expect, and who speak the language you want to learn. List all the languages you speak – even if on a basic level.
7. All the things you can help with; babysitting and housework etc
The more flexible you are, the greater the choice of nanny or au pair job offers you’ll have. Many families are looking for au pairs / nannies who will help with housework (cleaning, shopping, cooking etc) or other household related jobs. List all the things you’re happy to do.
8. Childcare experience
If you have experience as an au pair or nanny, write about this. This can help families feel that you understand what a childcare job is like. It also helps to build empathy and you will find a family faster. List other responsibilities you had whilst taking care of the children, e.g. school runs, cooking etc.
9. References
Families care about their family’s safety and happiness. Say in your profile if you can get references from previous families, or from trusted members of your community such as religious leaders, judges or members of professional associations (accountants and lawyers, etc.)
10. Write enough about you, but not too much
Getting the volume right is important. A very short description? It’s often not enough to get a family interested. Too long an au pair profile? Families often lead busy lives. Write enough information, but not so much that it’s difficult for them to read through. You can discuss details when you get in contact.
