Hello! My name is Katie Harris, and I will be graduating in May of 2019 from Barrett, the Honors College at Arizona State University, where I study Global Studies. My passion lies in engaging with youth in order to spread compassion, increase environmental awareness, and ultimately serve as a meaningful mentor.

I have experience working with youth in various ways, but most directly through my work as a camp counselor for two summers at Camp Ocoee in Ocoee, Tennessee. Throughout this experience, I realized my passion for creating genuine relationships with young adults. Through this role, I worked to provide young adults with the opportunity to escape their comfort zone and immerse themselves in the surrounding wilderness. Each summer, I was selected from amongst my peers to lead a cabin of young girls who came from difficult or unstable backgrounds. These young females had histories of anger management, PTSD, or sexual abuse, and I learned how to navigate these behaviors in order to create a positive atmosphere. I led weekly camping trips in the Cherokee National Forest, in which I was in charge of the safety and enjoyment of nine to twelve young girls in a remote setting. In addition, I was also selected each summer to guide a multi-day canoe trip for counselors in training. I have worked as a gymnastics coach for preschool and kindergarten aged children, and have also worked as a nanny for a five year old girl who I was able to see grow and mature.

I also have various experience traveling and engaging with individuals of different cultures who speak different languages. I have traveled solo throughout the United States in order to film a documentary on solo female travel, and currently live in Chiang Mai, Thailand, where I have traveled solo across different areas in southeast Asia while simultaneously volunteering as an English teacher in Thailand.
