Au pair from America named Gwen (19) looking to work with a warm and inviting family starting October 1st ~
(Trying to condense a lot of info into a tiny space since most websites usually give you more so apologies if it's a bit messy!!)
Dear family,
My name's Gwen. I'm originally from Raleigh, North Carolina, in the southern United States (sadly didn't get the cute accent though!) and am 19 years old. Having been put on a deferment plan for Aberystwyth university until next year, I've decided it would be worth a shot to try and au pair.
Something I should probably explain first is that I am transgender. One of the reasons I had to cut my stay in France short, is that it was during that time that I truly came to terms with myself and knew I wanted to transition, which I've been doing this past 7 months trying to finally be who I've always wanted and known myself to be. It's been a rough transition that certainly isn't over, but it's given me a lot of experience and made me a stronger person at the end of the day!
I suppose the big question is 'why be an au pair?.' I think at least personally it's a fairly straightforward hodgepodge of really cool opportunities and circumstances. Not only am able to live in a foreign country but in doing so I'm hopefully leaving a mark on young people's lives all while being able to experience the day-to-day life and banalities of a new family, which is something that really excites me.
As for experience with children, I'd say the bulk of it has been in my younger years dealing with my sister, Lily, who's more than 6 years younger than I am. She would often be entirely my responsibility while my parents were away so I've had a fair share of time spent taking care of her and being there for emotional support when she needs me. We're quite different people and have at some points had large arguments, but I think in terms of family she is the rock in my life and I put that in part to being there to help her grow up.
Beyond that, I think I'm a pretty easy going and low maintenance person. Though I can be awkward or shy at times, in true form I'm usually quite outgoing and talkative. I wear my heart on my sleeve and love having deep and emotional conversations with others, no matter who.
