Kammie, 22, American au pair in Paris suburb looking to return to the center of Paris August/September
Dear Family,
Thanks for taking the time to look at my profile! I am currently an au pair in Pierrelaye, a small Paris suburb, and I am looking into families for a second year to gain more experience with children, teaching/tutoring English as a foreign/second language, and the French language. I have a B1/B2 level of French language already, and with the children I'm currently an au pair for, I mostly speak French (there are 4 girls ages 2, 5, 8 and 9, and I try to speak a bit of English to the two oldest to help practice, but we mostly speak French for comprehension).
I was a university student (I graduated in June 2017) and completed a Bachelor's Degree in English and Writing. I also have a TEFL/TESL (Teaching English as a Foreign/Second Language) certificate.
I'm looking for an opportunity that focuses on teaching/tutoring, ESL help, child care, home care, or anything you need assistance with in order to exchange cultures and life stories! I also have an extensive background and career focus on writing, editing and journalism, so I'm more than able to help your family learn or improve their English.
I have taken 5 years of French in school in the United States, as well as completed 12 weeks here in France in a B1 level course, and though I feel confident in my grasp of the language, I am far from fluent. I also have 3-4 years of experience working with children as a nanny and as a tutor in the US, and my current au pair position will terminate this summer.
I have taught various subjects (through my school, a private in-home tutoring company, and freelance), including writing, literature, French, English as a second language, and grammar. I am capable of tutoring other subjects, but these are the ones I am most passionate about, because I study them myself at the university. Most recently in the US, I worked in an after-school program for young Vietnamese students from immigrant families, where I've helped them with English, other tutoring, and playing games. When I first arrived with my current host family, I was teaching part-time English in their children's school, but sadly I had to terminate that position. I would love to find another teaching position like this during the day for my second year in Paris, as my long-term goal is to be an English teacher for foreign language students.
I am a very patient and flexible person. I am passionate about traveling and discovering new places—I'm a very curious person! I've done a bit of traveling while I've been in France for the short time I've been here.
With children, I am very comfortable and open. I think I am still a kid somewhere deep down, so I feel right at home with young people! I'm creative and silly, and my passion/background in writing (both creative and technical/journalistic) helps me come up with games and techniques to incorporate an English lesson into a fun activity! I think I have found a strong balance between being an authority figure as a nanny or tutor, and being close-knit friends with the children I work with.
The main reason I want to au pair abroad is the culture exchange. I think that I have a lot to learn from other cultures, and I can teach others about life in America, as well as the English language. I think that life can be so much more rich and full when you share life experiences with people from different backgrounds.
Another reason I'd like to au pair is to get more hands-on experience with teaching, children, and the French language. I'm hoping to improve my French even more, maybe even strive towards fluency, by the time I leave next year (In the short few months I've already been here, I notice my language improving every day!).
I'm thankful for my current position as an au pair and everything that I have learned from them. Because of this, I am familiar with what to expect/what is expected of me for my second year, as well as the process of paperwork that comes before. The reason I will not be staying with this family for a second year is that I would like something more central to Paris, as well as more opportunities to teach/tutor my au pair children and possibly another teaching position during the day while the children are at school.
