We are a multicultural family in our late 30s with a boy aged 14 and a girl aged 11, looking for an
exceptional Au Pair to look after, entertain and inspire our little ones.
We are a multicultural family (French/Spanish) and we have lived in London for quite a few years now.
Our kids are 14 and 11 but we still need some support at home because we have demanding jobs and we also travel occasionally. We are fairly easy going and fun and we are very welcoming to our au pairs as we understand we are the main point of contact with a new place/culture in many cases.
We live in a 4 bedroom house in London. It is a lovely, quiet area only a few minutes from famous Notting Hill and Little Venice, very well connected to the main attractions in Central London by tube, bus or overground.
We would need you to take care of the kids, make sure they keep their routines and be their carer when we are abroad.
You will have your own bedroom, an ipod dock and access to wireless internet. In your free time you are welcome to spend time with us, we don't expect you to hide in your bedroom unless you want some time to yourself!
What sort of person are we looking for? You'll be great with teenagers and pre-teens, of course. In general, they have a tendency to want to do their own thing, so you will need to be approachable while consistent and firm to get them to do their chores. Both of the kids love to be connected so you'll have to come up with plenty of ideas to keep their attention, as well as making sure they go through their routines instead of always being on their iPads/iPhones.
At their age, they need more encouragement and supervision than actual childcare, but this will require much more enthusiasm and a lot of patience on your side to make sure they are on track. Things like making sure they have actually brushed their teeth instead of pretending to, or making sure they keep their room tidy and their school work organised are very important parts of your day to day.
You will be in charge of overseeing their homework and might have to make it a habit to sit down with them to review expected coursework, finished homework and even to help them where they are stuck. Of course, we will help if it is something you do not understand because of the language, but homework routines are really important so you'll have to make sure they stick to them.
You will have or will be keen to develop your cooking skills, because when we are not available you will have to cook for them. They enjoy sweets but we have to help in moderating their sweet tooth so you will make sure that what they are eating for snacks is healthy or at least balanced.
You will often will be with them unsupervised, especially in the evenings when us parents need to work late. This will include reminding them how to stay safe – whether it's food hygiene, personal hygiene, or ensuring they're wearing suitable clothing. At their age, they might think they are adult enough to make many decisions, but they will still need your guidance.
You will ensure their room and your own room is kept clean and that any mess made whilst cooking or looking after the kids is cleared up afterwards. With 2 young adults in the house things can get chaotic quickly if little continuous efforts aren't made. And learning to tidy up will also be an essential skill for them in the future!
We would prefer if you had some knowledge of spoken English and that you are a Spanish or French native. We don't expect you to be fluent but, as you will be interacting with the school as well as looking after the kids on your own, it is essential that you are able to communicate with people around you, although at home we will try to speak to the kids in our mother tongues.
Honesty and respect are very important to us. And so is finding someone who will use their own initiative. We want you to enjoy your stay with us, and would expect a commitment of 9 months minimum (the full school year) though if you want to stay longer, you can always come back after the summer. You will need to provide a reference. You will also need to be authorised to work as an au pair in the UK.
