Hey! My name is Lucy, and I'm a 19 y/o student from Bilbao, Spain. I like to look at myself as a genuine, thoughtful, joyful and fun; people often say im very bubbly, outgoing with a great sense of humor. I'm willing to help anyone in need and when I'm in, I'm all in. I don't really show anger or sadness much I always smile because I'm optimistic about life. I was taught to believe in myself and never down myself because I can accomplish anything.
Dearest possible future host families,
My name is Lucy, I am 19 years old and I've lived in Bilbao for eight years now, since my mom and I moved from Madrid because of her work. Well, in fact, I've been living in Spain since I was 20 months, my mom adopted me from Ethiopia after my biological parents because of a car accident, being me the only survival. My mother's name is Mercedes, (exactly, like the car) but she's often called Merche, a pretty common nickname here in Spain; she works as a director of the HR in three of the branches of a company dedicated to the manufacture of stainless steel for high-end cars. I don't have any siblings, and my mom is a widower, so we are a single parent family, but a very happy and loving one.
When I finished high school, I decided to start my studies in International Relations; I was accepted in three different universities, all very prestigious, Nebrija and Comillas, both located in Madrid, and Deusto, in Bilbao. After a lot of thinking, I chose to stay here in Bilbao in the faculty of Social Sciences and Law at the University of Deusto. Everyone was really surprised with my decision to stay, as I have always been very adventurous, but I thought it would be very enriching to study in my city with my beloved ones.
I have had a lot of experience abroad, and all foreign things fascinate me, I think it's mainly because of how much I've travelled with my mom and her passion for learning new things from diverse cultures. She wanted me to have the opportunity to travel to as many places as possible since I'm a kid, therefore, I started going to study outside of Spain at the age of 12 ,. The first time was in England, it was something new, and I only stayed for a month. I had such a good time that, the following year, I repeated that wonderful experience again. A year later, my mother and I decided that it would be a very good idea to go again, but for a longer time, and I studied a semester at a school in Ireland. Again, I loved it, as expected.
The journey that changed my life was the fourth. I was older and more mature, and this time I ventured and started my new stage in beautiful New Zealand. The main idea was to stay only for three months, but I was having so much fun, being so happy, learning so many things, and evolving on a personal level, that what started as three months, ended up being six. It truly changed my life.
Unfortunately, that was my last experience abroad as a student, I had to focus on the last two years of high school. However, my desire to know the world did not end, and one summer after returning from New Zealand, I decided to do something different, go volunteering in Ghana. I think it was my subconscious that made me make this decision. Being adopted and having the opportunity and privileges I have thanks to the efforts of a great mother, I felt that I needed to give these boys and girls, teenagers, of my age, the opportunity to study and see beyond, and with my little knowledge as a teacher, I gave myself to the maximum to teach them Geography, History, Art, Mathematics and much more. Even if from times to times I felt a bit sad, it was a lot of fun and especially very rewarding, to see how some with so little can become much happier than those who lack nothing.
To be honest, my experience in caring for children is not so wide. I've taken care of some of my mom's friends children, and from times to times my neighbours ask me to stay with their kids; but all the host families I've been with had a least three kids, so I can proudly say I now how to take care of them, treat them and they do like me. On the other hand, I have three little cousins, all girls, they are, two, six, and eight years old, so when I'm with them we dress up and do pageants, go to the pool, bake cupcakes and lot of fun stuff, , so I can proudly say I know how to take care of them, treat them and they do like me.
Regarding my personal tastes, I love art, so try to go as much as I can to the Guggenheim Museum or to Bellas Artes, also I have a passion for fashion and makeup. I enjoy reading when I have some leisure time, listening to music and watching movies, and as you could read, traveling, learning about other cultures and ways of life, meeting new people, talking and sharing experiences is also something I really enjoy. I'm into politics, as my career is mainly focused on that. When I'm with friends, I like going out to the mall, having brunch, and I'm not going to lie, I also like partying. Anyhow I'm not into drinking, but I think it's necessary to tell you that I do smoke tobacco, but I'm in process of quitting.
My first option is to take a gap year, but being an au pair is also I good option and a great experience. I want to give myself the opportunity to breathe a little before I completely dive headlong into university life, and as a student of International Relations, I think it might provide me with the opportunity to learn in a completely different way. Instead of simply reading about other cultures and places in books, learn by experiencing those cultures and places directly.
I am so excited with the opportunity to know you better and to be a member of your family. I hope you had fun reading my letter and knowing a bit more about me and my goals in live.
I look forward to hearing from you!
Best wishes,
Lucy.
