Au Pair from South Africa, Tenaé, 20, looking for adventurous family
To My Future Host Family,
Firstly I would like to begin by introducing myself. I am Tenae' Marriott, a bubbly 20 year old from Pretoria, South Africa. I was born in Johannesburg on the 23rd of February 1999 to two parents who have dedicated their lives to see me succeed. My mother is a 42 year old Real Estate Agent and my father is a 46 year old Engineering Consultant, both of them have taught me to chase my dreams. My father obtained his first degree at the age of 23 which was an Electrical Engineering degree and after this he went on to obtain his Mechanical Engineering degree while working. My parents split up when I was 6 years old and my mother went on to start her own company, now an international mining supply company which she sold two years ago. Despite the divorce, my parents still get along and both sides of my family enjoy holidays together.
I have 3 brothers. My biological brother turned 16 this year, has suffered from severe ADHD all his life and is my best friend. He definitely inherited my mom's brain for business and is thinking of pursuing a degree in business management when he finishes high school but besides this he is also an avid sportsman and was selected for a team traveling to California in December for a rugby tournament and plays for his school's cricket team. My stepbrother is 19 and currently works as an expat in Mozambique but he's been in my life since I was 9 and we've been great friends since. Three years ago my mother and stepfather decided to adopt another little boy, he is currently 7 and obsessed with school and swimming.
Being the eldest it is my responsibility to drive the youngest two to school and their extramural activities as well as cooking twice a week. Since moving back home a month ago, I have grown to appreciate this time with my family a lot more. We're a close knit family, every Christmas my aunts, uncles, grandparents and cousins gather for a huge celebration and this has happened every single year of my life. We also don't need Christmas as an excuse to get together, most weekends my aunts and uncles gather for a cook out and board game championships. I've been the winner for most of these championships.
In my spare time I enjoy reading, crochet, hikes, swimming and I recently stepped out of beauty pageants. At the age of 14 I won my first local beauty pageant and went on to win multiple national pageants as well as the international Miss World Junior 2014 beauty pageant where I took home the overall Best of the Best award. This pageant was held in Bodrum, Turkey which is one of the most beautiful countries I've had the pleasure to visit. More countries I've visited include Mauritius, England, Russia, The UAE, Namibia, Mozambique, Botswanna, Malawi, Zimbabwe and soon America.
If I had to use three words to describe myself I would use independent, ambitious and bubbly. After travelling to Russia and the UAE without my parents at the age of 16 and living on my own, I've learnt how to become independent and take care of myself. I've always believed that I am capable of great things and my biggest goal is to own my own company one day, after graduating as class president in 2017 I've worked as an au pair and in a law firm while studying which only fueled my ambition even more. Growing up I used to be shy but after doing beauty pageants, I have become a social butterfly and am happiest when surrounded by people to interact with.
The idea of becoming an au pair has been brewing in my mind since I was 17. A girl I knew had gone to the USA to Au Pair for a family in Minneapolis and she still has contact with the family today and I decided that I also wanted an extended family. This idea grew even more while I looked after a family friend's daughter after school for extra money. During 2018 I started to au pair for a family with a 9 month old boy and when I witnessed his first steps, I decided that I definitely wanted to do this for even more children. Spending my afternoons on the grass with this little boy and soothing him while his teeth came out, I was certain that this is what I would like to do.
I would be able to not only bring even more love to any household but I can also cook traditional foods such as koeksisters, bunny chow and potjiekos. Additionally, I can teach the children how to speak Afrikaans, which is one of my country's eleven official languages.
Currently, I am beyond excited to meet a new family and spend time getting to know even more about you and your culture. At the end of my year I hope to have gained more friends, family and loads of memories to cherish.
Thank you for taking the time to read my letter, I look forward to getting to know you and your family.
