Au pair from South Africa now living in Seattle looking to extend in Seattle.

Dear Host Family,

As a young 20 year old I still find myself exploring many different things. These things help me find myself and can automatically describe who I am and what I am about.

I hope this is not self-serving but I am very respectful and I have been taught manners from the day of birth. I've also learnt that respect can take you a long way and that it comes from both sides, however this does not mean that I have to wait for others to respect me before I respect them. Throughout my life thus far, I have been applauded by elderly people for my manners, etiquette and they often say that I should never change who I am for anyone.

Adventure, a word that flows strongly through my veins, has always been part of who I am. I am honestly not someone who can sit around or lay in bed all day because I prefer being outdoors, exploring. This is mainly the reason why I took long boarding as a hobby and I am really passionate about it. I have actually taught some children how to skate properly on a long board to prevent injury. To allow the children that I look after to experience nature and feel the thrills of adventure, I often take them for walks to the park. There we play, sit and laugh for hours.

Another thing that I am passionate about is rugby. Throughout my high school career I have played rugby and it has really shaped me as a person where teamwork is concerned. I've learnt that more things can be conquered or completed when you work as a team instead of facing mountains by yourself. Like my coach once said, “There is no I in the word team.” Those words stuck to me and I try my best to teach it to other children so that they can grow up knowing that they shouldn't be afraid to ask for a helping hand.

I am not sure if I should say this because opinions and beliefs might differ, but I love God. I am honestly not ashamed to say that I am a follower of Christ and I am truly sold out for Him. He is truly amazing and has always been there for me. He has opened so many doors of opportunity for me, including this one. I believe that He is the one that has given me the passion to love children, whether or not they are family. People know that I am a proud Christian and describe me as Happy Chappy because I always have a smile on my face no matter how bad a certain situation may be or seem and I always say that He is the reason for my smile. If our opinions do differ, I promise not to lay my beliefs upon your family because that is a sign of disrespect.

I guess that's me in a nutshell, Joshua Chapman.

My awesome childcare experience.

I am currently tutoring an eleven year old boy who is totally awesome. At least twice a week I assist him with his homework and school assignments/projects. I also make sure that he eats the right lunch at the right time while his parents are at work because it is important to keep his young body healthy. I also assist him with his sports activities so that he becomes physically stronger and builds confidence as well. So far he has improved a lot in his sports as well as excelled exceptionally in his schoolwork.

I am also assisting a mother with two young boys. The mother asked if I could assist her with her children because the father works long hours and it isn't easy raising an energetic 5 year old and a baby of a year old. I mostly spend time with the 5 year old boy because the mother needs to give the 1 year old a lot of attention. I drop him at crèche/daycare everyday as well as collect him. After I collect him I take him home and make sure that he gets a healthy snack such as yoghurt. We then play some sport and learn activities because it helps him become physically strong and develops his brain. This gets him ready for a relaxing bath and bedtime.

I have volunteered at two daycares and it was beneficial. The love that the children have shown me is indescribable and it really confirmed my love for them, no matter who they are or where they come from. At the daycare I helped the teachers with day to day duties and got the opportunity to introduce my own games and activities. I also led a classroom of multiple children, on my own, which taught me a lot of responsibility and the ability to think quickly on my feet.

So why do I want to be an Au Pair?

Firstly, I have a passion for children because I believe that they are a blessing from God. Yes sometimes they might act unbearable and do random mischievous things but that does not change the way I feel about them. I honestly accept them for who they are but I make sure that they have respect and know what they want to achieve in life. No matter where a child is born, what age the mother is, or whether the father is not present, I personally do not think that a child should suffer or lack necessities. I love to see children with faces that light up with big smiles and hold their tummies because they cannot contain their laughter, so it really helps that I am a person filled with humour.

Secondly, I always wanted to travel the world and doing Au Pair overseas is a good start to see the world. I actually want to explore each country in this beautiful world. I'm not exactly sure how I will be able to do that but I know that I am going to because anything is possible with God.

I really appreciate you taking the time out to read this. Just know that this is who I am and what I am about because I wrote with true honesty. Thank you so much.

Yours sincerely.
Joshua Chapman
