Being an au pair in Canada

  • Age: No age limits are specified in the Live-in Caregiver Program
  • Salary (Pocket money): Negotiable, must be specified in employment contract
  • Number of hrs to work and days off: Negotiable, must be specified in employment contract
  • Visas: An au pair can work in Canada under the Live-In Caregiver Program and will need to apply for a work permit. For more information on the Live-In Caregiver Programme and applying for a work permit see Visa requirements for Canada
  • Duration of stay: The work permit is valid for 4 years and 3 months.
  • Language requirements: Au pair must be able to speak, read and understand either English or French at a level that allows them to work independently in a home setting.
  • Health Insurance: An au pair must have medical and workplace safety insurance. These are paid for by the host family (the employer)
  • Travel costs: Travel costs to Canada from the au pair's home country must be paid by the host family, along with all recruitment fees
  • Language courses: There are no requirements for an au pair to attend language courses in Canada
