Being an au pair in Ireland

THIS PAGE WAS LAST UPDATED IN 2011

Employment requirements and conditions for au pairs and nannies change on a regular basis in every country. Please note it is YOUR responsibility to check the most up-to-date information on government websites. Thank you!

  • Age: There are no age restrictions for au pairs working coming from EEA countries. Under the Working Holiday Scheme the usual permitted age range is 18 – 30
  • Salary (Pocket money): Minimmum €100 for 30 hrs of work a week
  • Visas: Au pairs from the EEA countries do not need a work permit or visa to work in Ireland. They only have to register with the Irish police when they arrive. Au pairs from Argentina, Australia, Canada, Hong Kong, Japan, New Zealand, the Republic of Korea and the United States can come to Ireland under the Working Holiday scheme. Au pairs can come from other countries if they can obtain a student visa. See Visa requirements for Ireland for more information
  • Language requirements: There are no language requirements for Ireland but it is suggested that an au pair has a good understanding of English, the national language of Ireland in order to live independently. For example, to make it easy to contact emergency services or read medicine labels if necessary.
  • Health Insurance: It is not a requirement to have insurance to work in Ireland but it is advised that an au pair has both health and travel insurance
  • Travel costs: Travel costs to Ireland from the au pair's home country should be covered by the au pair. However, if the host family wants to pay for a part of the costs, it is suggested that they do so after the au pair has stayed with them for at least half of the agreed time.
